Fun Outdoor Winter Activities in New Hampshire

The state of New Hampshire is an outdoor lover’s wonderland.  There is so much to do outside in the cold winter months.  Many activities are inexpensive or even free.  Let’s take a look at some of the fun outdoor winter activities in New Hampshire.

sledding in new hampshire

Winter Activity #1 – Sledding

Sledding is not just for the young, sledding is just down right fun for anybody! If you don’t have a sled you can easily make your own at home. Try a laundry basket, trash can lids, a tarp, outdoor patio furniture cushions, pool float, air mattress or even a trash bag!!  In Manchester, you can check out the sloped area at Livingston Park for free sledding.  Try McIntyre ski area in Manchester for snow tubing.  This is one of the fastest growing winter activities because anyone can do it.  McIntyre offers tubing on a daily basis from 11am to 8pm depending on the day.

ice skating in new hampshire

Activity #2 – Ice skating

There are many places all over New Hampshire that offer both indoor and outdoor ice skating. Many have inexpensive ice skate rentals for you to use as well. If you are looking for indoor arenas you should try the JFK Coliseum in Manchester for weekend skating times, the Everett Arena in Concord has daily skate times and offers skating lessons too, you could also try the Tri Town Arena in Hooksett for open skate times and lessons. If you are feeling a little more festive and want to save money and be outside try Dorrs Pond in Manchester.  When the parks department clears the pond of snow it makes for a really fun place to skate.   There are outdoor skating rinks in Merrimack NH behind the Mastricola Middle School and in Nashua near Holman Stadium that are free.  Always be aware of ice safety if you are skating on a natural pond or lake.

Winter Activity #3 – Build a Snowman

Be young at heart and build a snow man! Grab a hat, mittens, buttons and a carrot for the nose. You will soon forget about your day to day stresses and have fun that doesn’t cost you any money.  Planning what your snowman will look like is a fun and creative activity for the whole family.  How about trying to build a snow family?

walking in winter

Activity #4 – Take a Walk

There is nothing like bundling up and taking a walk in the snow.  Check out the views from the Riverwalk in Manchester in the winter.  They are amazing.  When you get home a nice cup of hot chocolate will warm you up.  If you are near Derry, the Derry Rail Trail offers a wonderful place for a winter walk.

snowboarding in nh

Winter Activity #5 – Skiing or Snowboarding

Downhill skiing or snowboarding and cross-country skiing are prevalent in New Hampshire.  There are areas all over the state to try it out.  This outdoor sport does cost you some money and can be downright expensive.  However there are ways to save here too.  Check out this site for discounts on NH ski area tickets.   Many offer 2 for 1 days, lunch and ski clinic days and weekend family rates with rentals at discounted prices.  Check it out.  You can also ask at your child’s school about the NH 4th Grade Ski Program.  Students can earn free ski passes if their school participates.  Check out local ski shops to see if they offer discounted ticket prices to their customers.

dog sledding in nh

Activity #6 – Dog Sledding

In the northern areas of NH you will find several companies that offer dog sledding.  We recommend Muddy Paws in Jefferson NH for a really great adventure.  The sleds are fun but seeing the dogs is part of the experience too.

There is something so playful and wonderful about playing in the snow, getting fresh air, catching snowflakes on your tongue, sledding, ice skating or even just building a snowman. There are so many fun winter activities in New Hampshire to enjoy – go out and have some fun this winter!!
