How does a Non-Smoker Survive in a Smokers Apartment?

How does a Non-Smoker Survive in a Smokers Apartment?

You love your apartment and your roomie!  The only problem is that the other person is a smoker.  How can you help to mitigate the smell and odors left over from smoking?    In this post we will discuss some things that you can do to keep your apartment from smelling like smoke.

Deodorize the Carpets

A top to bottom Cleaning will help to eliminate odors in your apartment.  Don’t forget to include a carpet cleaning in this routine as the fibers of the carpet can hold odors.  You can take care of it by simply sprinkling some baking soda on the rug.  Grind it in a little bit and let it stay there for 30 to 60 minutes.  Then it’s time to break out the vacuum cleaner and thoroughly get all the baking soda up.  After vacuuming you can spray the carpets with an odor removing spray like Febreeze.  Another way to clean your carpets would be to rent a carpet cleaner or shampooer.  Make sure you move your furniture and get under all the chairs and tables in the rooms.

Change your air filters

This strategy will not prevent smoke from entering your apartment but it will help your apartment’s air conditioner or heater to handle the odors that make their way in.

White Vinegar

This inexpensive liquid has a strong odor of its own, but a little of it in some bowls in your apartment will help to make the air in your apartment smell better until the smell of smoke fades away.  If you don’t like the smell of vinegar drop a few drops of an essential oil like lavender into the vinegar.  You can dip a clean cloth is the vinegar and wipe down furniture and walls too.

Buy an Air Purifier

An air purifier will do wonders to scrub out the smoke and dust in the air.  Make sure you get one that is sized for your room.  Some come with a HEPA filter too.

Open a Window

Let some fresh air in your aprtment by opening the windows from time to time.  You might even ask the smoker in your apartment to smoke near the open window and blow the smoke outside.  This may not clear every bit of the odor but it certainly will help.  In the winter months be mindful of energy costs that you will have to deal with from letting cold air into your apartment.  Leave the window open for shorter amounts of time in the winter.  You could also ask your roomie to go outside the building to smoke.   Apartment Living can be easy when you follow these simple tips.
