What is the most affordable way to get cable television?  For anyone that has dealt with the cable companies before, you are probably used to overpriced cable packages, poor customer service, and offers that lock you into contracts for extended periods of time! Now if spending money is no object, then this pay to play method the cable companies use is probably of no issue to you…but if you cherish your hard earned money and would like a cheaper alternative to the high priced cable companies, then read on for some new, cheaper, innovative ways to stream movies, television shows, and even live television!

Free Methods

We all know that anything can be found on the internet as long as you know where to look. Free cable television shows and movies are no different. Many television networks have their own website which offer select streaming of shows & movies. Some networks sites may even offer free downloads of select episodes/movies. Smart TV’s or products like Roku/Google Chromecast allow you to download network apps and stream/download TV shows past/present, even new releases! is another platform that can be used to stream free video content. Youtube (and other video streaming websites) will host thousands of user uploaded viral videos. Your traditional Hollywood movies or popular network television shows may require a rental/purchasing fee to download or stream the content, but if indie films and documentary films are more your thing, then there will be plenty of content for you to watch on site/apps like these that are free. Lastly, the place to go for free entertainment options is the library. Almost all public libraries will rent movies, television shows, workout films and documentaries for up to a week or two at a time. It's free if you have a library card.  This is a great alternative if streaming/internet is not an option and you have a way to get to and from the library in your town!

There are tons of new more affordable ways to watch your favorite television shows and movies without locking in to a long term contract with a cable company. (many of these options do required internet connection) Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video are low cost alternatives to cable that allow you unlimited streaming of your favorite tv shows, movies, and documentary’s for a low monthly cost. ($8-$12) These services allow you to stream your shows or movies on multiple devices (xbox, playstation, smart TV, ROKU, Apple TV, phone, tablet) and even download content to view when not connected to the internet. Many of these services offer you a free trial so you can see if there are shows or movies that you enjoy watching before you have to subscribe and pay.
