Getting a gym membership can definitely help you work towards that goal. However, if you aren’t careful when signing up for a membership, the only thing that will be getting slim will be your wallet. These tips will help you slim down your waistline, while keeping more money in your pocket.
Don’t Hesitate to Negotiate
Often times, gyms have member quotas that they need to meet for certain months. If you negotiate with them, they may be inclined to make a deal with you just so they can meet their quota. Often times, Managers have more clout to do this then just regular employees so if you can negotiate directly with the manager, this is the best route to go.
Check with Your Employer
Often times, employers will pay for your gym membership through their health coverage. Before you start looking for a gym, it may be worthwhile to ask Human Resources if there is coverage, and if there are restrictions on which gym you can go to in order to receive that coverage.
Weigh Out Extras
Often times, gyms will try to push you into getting as many extras as you can. Everything from tanning to personal trainers and daycare are extras offered by some gyms. However, often times you won’t need those extras. Really weigh out what extras you are willing to pay for before you head to the gym, so you won’t be swayed by the flashy sales pitch. Often times, specialty classes such as Yoga, Spinning or Crossfit will cost more than your average gym, so it’s really up to you to determine if it is worth the extra cost.
Look for Deals
In order to get acclimated with the gym, some gyms offer a free trial period or free classes at the specialty Gyms. Be sure to take advantage of them so you can really get to see if paying for classes at this gym is the best route. In addition, sites like LivingSocial and Groupon constantly have deals going for different gyms, especially specialty gyms.
