5 Tips for Road Trips with Your Pets

Our pets are part of our family, and sometimes we have to take them for a ride.  Whether you’re taking a quick trip to the vet or going on a cross-country vacation, there are some important things to keep in mind to ensure you and your furry friends have a safe and pleasant journey.  Here are our tips for road trips with your pets

TEST DRIVE:

Some animals love going on adventures in the car…for others, particularly cats, it can be a very stressful experience, both for you and them.  Before embarking on a long trip it’s a good idea to take some shorter treks around the neighborhood to acclimate your pet to the sights, sounds, and sensation of travel.  If your pets hate to travel your vet may be able to give you some mild sedatives.  This is a great tip for road trips with your pets.

STAY SECURE:

As much as we enjoy having our pal in our lap, and even though some cats and dogs may yearn to explore, it’s very important that your pet is secure.  Animals are unpredictable and it can be dangerous for you and them if they are roaming freely.  If you have the space, utilize a large carrier/crate so they can change positions.  Also be sure to secure the carrier with a harness or a seatbelt.

PIT STOPS:

Take breaks to let your pet stretch and walk around and use the bathroom.  But be sure to use a leash or harness and make sure your companion is wearing a tag and/or has a microchip.  Don’t ever leave your pet unattended in a vehicle.  The temperature can rise to a dangerous level very quickly.  Always clean up after your pets.

PLAN AHEAD:

Make sure you have plenty of food and water for your animal’s journey.  If your pet has a weak stomach, refrain from feeding them right before you drive.  For long trips, make sure you find hotels that can accommodate you.   You can find an extensive list of pet friendly lodging here.

DON’T GO IT ALONE:

Bring along a travel buddy.  It can be overwhelming to be alone in a moving vehicle with your pet.  Have someone with you that can take care of any unexpected issues so you can stay focused on the road.
