Manchester NH Arts
We all know that a vibrant community is one where the arts thrive. In Manchester, New Hampshire we went in search of the best places to take in culture. We were lucky…we didn’t have to look very hard to find great Manchester NH arts venues!
The Currier Museum of Art
The Currier Art Museum is in the north end of Manchester. This north end gem is on Ash Street opened in 1929 and has remained a vital part of the city for all those years. The quality of art is amazing here. You can view works by Picasso, Monet, Turner and Matisse. There is a big variety of art forms too. Sculpture, furniture, paintings and glass are just a few of the media forms that art takes here. As you walk to the Museum from their parking lot you are greeted by a massive red and black sculpture called “Origins” by Mark Suvero. It is large and impressive. The Museum has a revolving menu of exhibits that change throughout the year. All are well done.
One of my favorite pieces in the museum is the Zimmerman House. It is a Frank Lloyd Wright house and is open for tours in the warmer months. It is a treat to see. The museum recently acquired a second Frank Lloyd Wright that is available for touring too.
The Palace Theatre
The Palace Theatre is an historic theatre that is over 100 years old. It sits proudly right next to Red Oak’s historic Opera Block Apartments. The Palace showcases a full repertoire of shows, performances, comedy acts, musicians and children’s programming throughout the year. All shows are presented in the beautifully restored theatre. Ask President, Peter Ramsay, for a back stage tour. It is fascinating to see how everything works. There is plenty of parking at the parking garage that is across the street from the Palace Theatre.
The Rex Theatre
The Rex Theatre has recently been restored to its original elegance and committment to the arts in Manchester. This historic location is part of the historic Palace Theatre collection and offers a wide variety of musical and performance acts. Local commedians are popular here and it’s easy to get tickets to events.
Art Galleries
We love art galleries! You can see student exhibits at New England College’s Institute of Art and Design in Downtown Manchester. This fully accredited college offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Art. At the end of each semester the students display their work. It is eye opening and beautiful.
Check out the gallery at Manchester’s City Hall too. The hallways are lined with art works from students in the city’s public schools. You never know what beautiful work you will see as the exhibit rotates throughout the year. We are lucky to live in a city where the arts are appreciated and encouraged. Make it a point to check out some of these great spots.
