Finding a Hairdresser

Moving to a new city can be a little overwhelming at first. As with any change, moving means finding new grocery stores, the closest gas station and shopping mall, and of course the nearest Dunkin Donuts! Another challenge when moving to a new area is the task of finding a new hair dresser. Not every hair salon will fit your preferences and style. Here are some tips for finding a hairdresser.

Consultation with a New Hairdresser

When finding a hairdresser book a consultation to get a feel for whether or not their salon will be the right fit for you. Inquire about the services they offer, products, techniques and even ask to see their portfolio. After the consultation you will have a better feel for the stylist’s overall personality and demeanor.

Do Your Research to Find a Hairdresser that is New to You

Keep in mind that when researching a salon, usually what you pay for is what you get. Again, decide what it is you are after-if you are satisfied with a quick and easy, low maintenance cut then you may be satisfied with a low-cost haircut. If you tend to be more particular with your hair, then splurge on a higher priced salon with more stylish results.

Be Specific when Finding a Hairdresser

When meeting with a stylist don’t be shy! – ask honest questions and for their suggestions. Make sure to be specific when discussing what hairstyles you like and your expectations.

Ask for recommendations from trusted friends or neighbors in the area

Ask trusted friends or neighbors (especially those with hairstyles you like) where they get their hair done or for recommendations.

Social Media

Most salons have a social media presence. By navigating through their social media pages you can get a feel for the personality of the entire salon and how they present themselves.

Know Your Products and Preferences

Knowing what products you use and like can help the stylist get a better feel for what it is you are looking for. A salon that carries the products you use can be a good indication that the style you are looking for is possible there. Also, some products have salon locators that can direct you to the salons that use them.

Call Around to Find a New Hairdresser

Simply by calling the salon and speaking to the receptionist you can get a feel for the professionalism and training of the salon staff. Also, the receptionist may be able to discuss with you what you are looking for and suggest which stylist would be the best fit.

Remember to Keep Realistic Expectations

Keep in mind when reviewing a salon that it is impossible for a stylist to give you what you want unless you openly communicate your expectations. Remember too, that everyone’s hair type is different.  Just because something looks great on someone else does not mean that same style will look right on you. Know the limits to your hair-what generally works and what doesn’t.

With budget friendly salons such as Super Cuts in the area; to slightly more upscale (yet still affordable) salons such as Bliss by Design in Merrimack, or Je Beau Boutique and Salon in Bedford  (and many in between!) there are numerous chances to find the salon that works best for you.
