Flea and Tick Tricks to Protect your Pooch

Living in an apartment in New Hampshire is great because there are so many opportunities to get close to nature and enjoy the great outdoors. City and State Parks, walking trails and nearby pet friendly attractions make it easy to exercise your pet.   While Scampy sits in the grass wagging his tail, he’s probably not thinking about protection from fleas and ticks. But you can! There’s no way to fully eliminate fleas and ticks from your surroundings, but it is important to make sure your pets have as much protection from them as possible. Here are a few flea and tick tricks to protect your pooch.

Keep Pets Safe at Halloween

Protect your yard from Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are most commonly spread by wild animals like squirrels, raccoons, and other small rodents who make their way into parks and outdoor spaces. These animals then spread the parasites throughout the area where your pet plays. Unfortunately, even a fence will not fully prohibit these animals from coming in.  Again, it is impossible to stop every single animal from roaming about; however there are some easy steps to take to try to lessen their visits.

Don’t leave breadcrumbs, seeds, etc.

Apartment living is not conducive to leaving food out for critters.  Although you may feel like you are doing something good, when you leave out breadcrumbs, seeds or other food it encourages critters with fleas and ticks to come near your building.  It also attracts mice which you don’t want to find a way into your apartment.  Leaving food out for potentially flea/tick infested animals encourages them to continuously come around and possibly spread the parasites to your pet.

Lifestyle

Check your clothes!

Believe it or not even humans can be carriers of fleas and ticks. Before coming back inside make sure to check your own clothes. Fleas and ticks are extremely small often making it hard to even notice if they are there. Fleas and ticks can easily latch on to socks, inside pant legs or shoes, and can even find a home inside your favorite baseball cap. Also, be sure if you are having other pet-loving company over that they are not unknowingly carrying fleas or ticks from their own pooch.  Always check your clothing when you come in from time spent outside.  This can also help to eliminate the threat of Lime disease carrying ticks.
