Ride the Rails for Fall Foliage

Let’s start out in Lincoln New Hampshire at the Hobo Railroad.   This train operates from mid September to Mid October and offers a 1 hr and 20 min train ride through the beautiful White Mountains of NH.  Your ticket includes samples of NH made farm products, a walk through the corn maize and a chance to see the Scarecrow Critters made by the Annalee Doll Company from Meredith, NH.

The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad offers 1-hour round-trip Fall Foliage train rides on weekends & holidays after Labor Day from its Weirs Beach Station at 211 Lakeside Avenue. These excursions travel along the western shore of Lake Winnipesaukee from Weirs Beach to Lakeport and back.  Bring a lunch and enjoy the views.

Visit North Conway NH and the Conway Scenic Railroad for an amazing train experience.  Departures are frequent from this location.  You can choose a 1 hour ride or choose a 5 hour trip through the Notches of Northern NH on select days.  This is a breathtaking experience over restored rail lines from the 1880’s.

See The Foliage From Your Own Car

If trains are not your thing, you can still see the beauty of the foliage from your car.  The Kancamagus Highway is New Hampshire’s National Scenic Byway with the tongue-twister name.  It is New England’s most superb scenic drive and a beloved fall foliage route. Plan your trip along the Kancamagus Highway  and leave time to stop at several of the roadside byways.  There are ample picnic spots, places to get your feet wet, if you desire, and many short hikes.  We recommend the Sabbaday Falls Trail.   The hike is less than a half mile and will take your breath away with stunning sights of the waterfalls. Be sure to buy a parking pass to avoid fines for leaving your car in a lot during your hike.

Other Fun Adventures During Foliage Time in NH

Check out Moose Alley, the stretch of Route 3 that runs from Pittsburg, New Hampshire, to the Canadian border.  It is one of the best places to see moose in New England. It’s also a scenic drive through New Hampshire’s wild and pristine Great North Woods–moose or no moose.

Want to see foliage that is close to home?  We suggest a fall foliage hike close to home.  New Hampshire has many scenic areas to explore in the fall.  We suggest a short hike on the Uncanoonuc Mountains in Goffstown, NH.  View Trail Maps here.  This hike is just a short distance from your Red Oak Apartment in our Village at Second Street Neighborhood.
