The Lowdown On Manchester Grocery Stores

The Lowdown On Manchester Grocery Stores

Let’s face it, grocery shopping is not always your most favorite chore on the weekly to-do list, but when you have a variety of stores to choose from it can make the task more interesting.   Here are some of the most popular and best valued super markets in Manchester and the surrounding area.

1. Market Basket – 460 Elm Street in Manchester, NH

Manchester’s only downtown grocery store is Market Basket at 460 Elm Street.  This urban oasis offers the largest variety of groceries, produce and meats in the city of Manchester.  The pride with which this store operates is keyed off the founders’ values for good prices, friendly service and a wide variety of goods.   Because of these beliefs, Market Basket is always busy and full of life.  Shopping early or later in the day is a good tip to follow as the crowds may be lighter then.  Be sure to sample the fare in their kitchen area for delicious readymade foods, salads and pizzas.  The meat cutters at Market Basket are expert butchers.  Need a specialty cut of meat for an occasion, they can do that.  A crown roast, rack of lamb or prime rib is never a problem. Parking is easy at this location and the staff is always ready to answer your questions.  One fact to consider when shopping at Market Basket is that the layout of their stores takes a bit of time to get used to.  The center aisles of the store house paper goods, toiletries and soaps, etc.  Many prefer that these items be in a separate corner of a store.  All in all, Market Basket is economical, easy and convenient. Market Basket wants to be more than just a local grocery store to its employees and patrons and believes in a, “legacy of loyalty, discipline, respect, fairness, and honesty”.

Hannaford Grocery stores are a chain from Maine that has expanded into New Hampshire in recent years.  There are several Hannaford Stores in the Greater Manchester area.  Three are in the city and 2 are in Bedford and one in Goffstown.  You are never far from a Hannaford.  Prices are a bit higher here but many shoppers like the offerings from their bakery, the large selection of fresh fruits and veggies and the presentation of deli and meat items.  Their specialty butcher items are made grill or oven ready.  The set-up of the store flows well and parking is never an issue.  Friendly staff are ready to help.  Hannaford is a good choice for your grocery shopping. As Hannaford continues to grow, so do its new stores, some complete with in-store kitchens and specialty shop department.

3. A Market – 125 Loring Street, off South Willow Street in Manchester, NH

A Market is all about making people well.   This smaller, independent grocery store focuses on health food and natural and organic beauty items and health supplements. They want to, “help you achieve wellness by providing personal interaction, ongoing education, and guaranteed satisfaction”. There is a big emphasis on eating natural foods that can become a normal part of anyone’s diet.  Keeping it local is a focus here as they source many of their items from local farms and providers.  Homemade foods are not to be missed at A Market.  Be sure to try the curried chicken salad and the beet salad for a real treat!  Natural and organic foods can be a bit pricey so keep this in mind when you visit here.  A Market was founded in Manchester in 1970 and has been a staple in the health food community in this city ever since.

4. Saigon Asian Market – 476 Union Street in Manchester, NH

For a great selection of Asian food items, produce and noodles, Saigon Asian Market is the best in the city. The food that is sold here is extremely authentic and a variety of items cannot be found in other supermarkets. They enjoy offering hard to find Asian food and ingredients and even offer select Hispanic foods and spices that chain stores do not carry. The store has moved to a bigger location recently, which means that Saigon can offer more food and better parking. It offers some of the best valued ethnic groceries in the city.

5. Price Rite of Manchester – 365 Lincoln Street

A convenient location and value based on the power of a national brand helps to keep Price Rite competitive.  Shoppers of Price Rite like the fresh meat and produce that is always available. The brand names of products are cheaper than other chain stores.  The location of Price Rite in Manchester is convenient to the center city and other shops.  We like going here because we can combine several errands into one trip.  Check their website for specials and coupons that can help you to save even more. Price Rite also has a private brand of everything they sell so customers can get the most for their money. Customers bring their own reusable shopping bags and bag their own groceries, which helps cut down on plastic waste and allows for faster, smoother checkout experiences. Overall, Price Rite values customer service above all else.

6. Whole Foods - 121 South River Road,  Bedford, NH

A short trip to Bedford is not too far to drive if you want to experience Whole Foods.  The vibe here is always great!  At Whole Foods, you can try a wide range of organic and local produce, meats and cheeses. Their deli area and prepared foods area is second to none in the area.  If you are having a special dinner consider adding one of their delicious sides to your table.  Their grocery basics are varied and always interesting.  Need flowers for your table?  Whole Foods has the best arrays of fresh cut flowers that we have ever seen in a grocery store.  We love the pub inside the store too.  Remember that Whole Foods is now owned by Amazon, so if you are an Amazon Prime member you can get additional deals and savings at the store.

7. Trader Joe’s - 2 Market Street, Bedford, NH

The new Trader Joe’s in Bedford is also a treat.  They specialize in unusual and different offerings that you will not find in a conventional grocery store.  Packaged goods and some items that are in bulk are a good value.  Be sure to try their cheeses and bakery goods.  Parking is great at both of these locations.
