Protect Your Eyes during the Solar Eclipse

If you plan to witness the 2024 total solar eclipse on April 8 in New Hampshire, it’s essential to protect your eyes to avoid potential visual damage.  A total solar eclipse is a rare and awe-inspiring astronomical event that will happen on April 8, 2024. This rare event will be visible from parts of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. However, it is important to note that the sun’s immense radiation and heat can cause severe and irreparable eye damage if viewed without proper protection. In this post, we want to discuss five guidelines for safe solar eclipse viewing to ensure you protect your eyes.  Read more tips for eye safety here.

Wear solar glasses

The first and foremost step is to wear a pair of approved solar glasses. These glasses, also known as eclipse glasses, are specially designed to filter all but a small portion of the sun’s light, allowing you to safely observe the eclipse. It is crucial to wear solar glasses for the entire duration of the eclipse, including before and after the total eclipse when the sun partially disappears behind the moon. You can purchase solar glasses from various online stores, department stores, or opticians’ shops.

Use a handheld solar viewer

If you don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses, you can use a handheld solar viewer. These devices usually consist of a protective case and a sun shield that you can use to peek at the sun during the solar eclipse.

Keep your visual acuity

Maintaining your visual acuity is also important during a solar eclipse. Ensure that your eyes are healthy and in good shape before the event. It is difficult to notice subtle visual disturbances resulting from the eclipse during visual impairments or defects. Therefore, if you have a family history of cataracts or other eye diseases, you may need to work with your optician to protect yourself during the eclipse.

Practice safe viewing

It is important to position yourself in a safe and secure location to view the eclipse. Avoid standing under a power line or any other structure that may fall during the eclipse. Find a beautiful location, sit down and enjoy the view of the eclipse from a safe position.

Follow the forecast

Before you go out to view the eclipse, it is necessary to check the forecast. The weather may be cloudy.  This will obscure the view.  It does not however, block out the harmful rays.  Never look at the sun even when it may be cloudy.
